I've been using selfmade ones or many years. The electricity it costs me to type these words is probably more than the brass shim stock & rubber I made them from.

Some things cost a company more to "inventory" and "offer" than the actual value of the item.

Ya the stew mack attack prices are sumpthin eh...
and
Ya me gotts brass stock and rubber tubin and and and 15 -20 min of time to pull it all together. Locating the stock, cutting it, pulling out the anvil ect.

However 15 -20 min of time to a professional practicing builder or repairman is way more than ten bucks.

One min on line click click click ...low and behold, its in the mail in another hour. Not only that ...is well made.

Ya, me know how to pull and crimp wire...but that don 't mean me gonna start making me own fret wire. No way! Same with a lot of the S&M tools me has in the dungeon ...er I mean shop. laughing6-hehe

While Stew Mac does have nice tools, and everything you could possible need, their prices make me look everywhere else before ordering from them.

They DO have great customer service, and ship VERY fast. That's a plus.

And the Waverlys..

I've been dealing with them for almost 35 years and I couldn't be more satisfied with Stew-Mac... service and products.... likewise with LMII and before them LMI and before them Michael Gurian and Walter Lipton .....I'm glad that they have provided products and services to small makers over the years.... Me, I'd rather make instruments than make tools...and I don't mind paying for quality

I think Stew Mac is a great company, too, and I don't blame them for offering things like this. Nobody forces us to buy them. In this case, I have found that a piece of painter's tape or a piece of string works just as well. Maybe better, as those options won't scratch the back of the neck. But, that said, I still don't find any fault with Stew Mac for offering this product. Many of their other products are much more practical, and I own quite a number of them. They are in business to sell products and we all know that. They are pretty darned successful at it, too. We, who have a thing to sell, should all be so blessed and lucky.

The buying choice is always up to the buyer.

I guess it seems expensive for what it is. But its probably the only way they can offer these things with the business model. They probably had to buy a thousand or so and hold them until someone buys them, yada yada. Sure you can make one much cheaper...but you probably wouldn't make one and sell it to someone else much cheaper.
Overall I think StewMac's prices are pretty fair considering the huge amount of service they provide to a small market (and I hope they'll give me my dog back now laughing6-hehe )

I would like to see a $ amount that would include shipping cost , Say a $300.00 order and free shipping "just tossing out a number as idea" I try and buy in quantity so as to keep the shipping cost as low as possible for the items i buy . Just an observation .

I do agree that I have had excellent service and follow up with Stew-Mac and gladly recommend them [:Y:]

Funny how we all have different reactions to stuff like this. When I saw the add in my e-mail, I said. "Yup... That'll save me some dickin' around. Next order, I'll get a set." At $40.00 an hour for repair work, $10.00 is cheap for a tool that'll last for years & simplify one fiddly step I need to take several times a week.

I don't buy everything they make but honestly, some things are a necessity if you want to do a professional job. For example various reamers they have: Sure you can live without them or even get 10 dollar ones from Grizzly but the cheaper ones are often the wrong cut, meaning they'll chatter on wood and ruin a customer's guitar, and file tangs aren't good enough for the job. In particular the endpin jack reamer is a must if you do a lot of acoustic guitar pickup installation... it turns a scary 20 minute job into a 2 second job, and on top of that you can actually use it to ream tuner holes (for example turning the smaller tuner hole to fit the 10mm tuner holes for Gotoh/Schaller tuners). It would be nice if it came with handles so I can turn it by hand...

I usually lay down tape on the peghead to prevent finish damage anyway. Well slacked strings & a bit of tape in the right spot would prevent any damage.

Yeah. If you're a builder I could see why you wouldn't bother, but if you do a lot of setup/repair work, 10$ will get saved pretty darn quick. Think about their little string lifter gadget. Marvelous. I've lifted a whole lotta strings without ever thinking of a device like that. So, you say 10$! I say, 10$? Pfff, I make that in like, an HOUR!
